Additional Information: Date: Jun 17, 2009 15:55 From My Blog: I thought I would add some context to the video clips that are posted below and were taken from a Pedagogy in Practice Pedagogy Master Class and Teacher Workshop I gave at Peabody this spring. The young lady in the clips where we were working on vibrato and shifting has been my student for 2 years and the teachers were asking about what kinds of things we had worked on during that time to make changes in her playing. As with students of any level, I spend a lot of time on fluidity of motion, and usually start with gross motor skills when encouraging physical changes. Hence, the harmonic shifts that travel the whole fingerboard and large arm slides for preparing a loose vibrato. If you are familiar with Paul Rolland videos "Teaching of Action in String Playing", you will recognize that my teaching has been heavily influenced by Rolland's work. I have developed a series of sequential "Warm Ups" that I do with students of all levels that help lay the groundwork for develop fluidity of motions for all the physical aspects of playing (shifting, vibrato, retakes, bow strokes, breathing, etc.). It is in constant evolution, but perhaps I will start putting up clips of some of my favorites.
